The Medical Council of Tanganyika is a statutory body which was been established in 1959 under Section 3 of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Ordinance, Ca 409. This ordinance was revise in 2002 and is now called the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act, Cap, 152 (2002 RE) of the Laws of Tanzania. The Council is mandated power to oversee medical and dental practice in Tanzania. Specifically the Council is empowered to ensure safe and effective practice for Medical doctors and dentists. The head quarter of this council is located within the Ministry of Health and social Welfare, Dar es Salaam.

The functions of the Council are generally to carry out the provisions of the Medical and Dental Practitioners, specifically;-To keep and maintain the Register of medial or dental practitioners registered or licensed under the Act or to keep the Rolls of clinical officers or dental therapists and to keep the list of Clinical.

    To publish in the Gazette the name, addresses and qualifications of all newly registered medical or dental practitioners and lincensed assistant medical or dental practitioners.
    To restore into the Register, Rolls or List the names of person previously erased from the Register, Rolls or list.
    To administer caution, or censure, order the suspension from practice or direct erasure from the Register, Rolls and use of the name of medical or dental practitioners, allied medical or dental practitioners convicted of an offense or who after due inquiry by the Council found guilty of infamous professional misconduct.
    To register, license, enroll or enlist person who full the requirements set out under this Act.
    To evaluate and determine as the Council deem fit, the kind of training in medicine or dentistry in respect of which the holder of a certificate may be recognized for the time being by the Council as furnishing sufficient, guarantee that the holder possess the requisite knowledge and skill for the efficient practice of medicine and dentistry etc.
